The Historical General Assembly will meet to discuss the Situation in Somalia in 1992. Rather than simulate one of the 6 Main Committees of the General Assembly (i.e. SPECPOL, LEGAL, etc.) this body will simulate the General Assembly to engage more fully with the topic rather than be restricted to the purview of the Main Committees. The Somali conflict is a multidimensional dispute caused by the fall of President Said Barre regime on 27 January 1991. General Barre’s dictatorship was ridden with extreme brutality, suppression of opposition groups, and exacerbation of inter-clan rivalries. By 1988, the dissatisfaction with the government led to nationalist groups throughout the country, with Northern Somalia leading the charge and attacking the government within military protests, triggering the Somali civil war. Delegates will be tasked with navigating the future path of Somalia after this change in power while meeting the political, social, and economic needs of the country and its people.

Delegates should note that ECOFIN and HGA will be single-topic-only GA committees at MUNUC 35, with the other GAs having two potential topics. As you consider and discuss the situation in Somalia in 1992, bear in mind the necessity for multilateral collaboration and a variety of perspectives for effective resolutions to be passed. The expansive nature of this committee will require inventive and unconventional solutions, tackling not only the short-term humanitarian issues but also the long-term impact on the country’s political and economic aspirations.
