Office of Digital and Emerging Technologies ODET

The Office of Digital and Emerging Technologies (ODET) is an agency which was created in direct response to what many believe is a critical global debate for the 21st century. Who has the ability to shape, govern, and benefit from artificial intelligence? AI is not just an emerging technology, it is a force that will impact every aspect of our lives moving forward such as education, research, communication, business, and government. Therefore, it is evident from these advances that the committee must represent a new form of power and control over artificial intelligence, because it is so much more than just a simple technological advancement. This committee in MUNUC 39 invites its members to consider how AI should be governed in a world where its benefits, risks, and consequences are not distributed equally.

TOPIC A: Global Access to AI Infrastructure
From impacting global equity to influencing the media, AI is becoming integrated into all aspects of daily life leading to the question: What and how is the ethical way to use it? Delegates will consider the intense scrutiny AI usage and development is currently facing to come up with solutions towards how regulations and policies are implemented depending on the circumstances of their situations. As delegates uncover the complexities surrounding AI, they will have to consider some of the following issues: Who is leading AI development and how are these models being developed, specifically how are they being trained? In what way does this access to AI impact global equity and the economy? To what extent should AI be incorporated in the media if it is developed to have certain biases, and how can we prevent these biases? In the development and implementation of AI, how are everyday people being affected by it? This topic requires delegates to be considerate on the current conditions surrounding modern day life as it pertains to how AI is created and implemented.

The ODET will focus on the questions surrounding artificial intelligence, specifically those regarding the standards in which it should be handled. Delegates will decide the manner in which these policies and orders will be implemented.
