The Legal Committee is the Sixth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. It serves as the primary forum for the consideration of legal questions. In particular, LEGAL provides Member States with a platform to deliberate upon and formally develop international law in response to emerging issues. LEGAL aims to uphold the rule of law globally and addresses topics such as state sovereignty, dispute resolution, and the codification of legal norms. This year’s topics will explore new technological advancements while also examining existing gaps in international rights frameworks.

TOPIC A: Regulation on the Environmental Impacts of AI
As the world moves toward an AI-driven future, the international legal landscape must evolve to ensure that technological progress does not contribute to environmental damage. From the immense energy consumption of data centers to the depletion of water resources to the generation of electronic waste, the environmental implications of AI are rapidly growing. While certain regulations on AI exist, such as the European Union’s AI Act of 2024, they have primarily focused on data privacy and ethics while overlooking the environmental dimensions of AI. Furthermore, regulations have largely remained at the regional or national level, highlighting the need for more coordinated and international AI governance. This committee will discuss how existing environmental frameworks might be adapted to include AI-related regulations—or if entirely new legal frameworks are necessary. Delegates must work to hold state and corporate actors accountable for AI’s environmental footprint while balancing economic growth and innovation, ultimately promoting a future in which AI can be leveraged for good.

TOPIC B: Rights of International Journalists
In an era of rising disinformation, international journalists play a crucial role in promoting accountability across Member States. Despite protections outlined in the Geneva Conventions and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), members of the press continue to face political persecution, including arbitrary detention, state-sponsored surveillance, and targeted violence in conflict zones. Furthermore, the legal definition of a “media worker” has become increasingly unclear in an age of citizen journalism and social media. This committee will examine the limitations of current legal protections for journalists, balancing the right to information with national security concerns. However, delegates must also navigate the delicate legal intersection between freedom of expression and the right to privacy. This tension is especially relevant for indigenous groups, who maintain the right to remain unsurveyed and exercise sovereignty over their own data and cultural narratives. Delegates must develop a legal framework that protects investigative liberties while ensuring that journalists respect the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) of vulnerable communities.
