The Social, Humanitarian, & Cultural Committee (SOCHUM), also known as the Third Committee of the General Assembly of the United Nations, is tasked with solving a range of social, humanitarian affairs and human rights issues that affect people all over the world. During MUNUC 32, delegates will have the opportunity to resolve two issues with significant impact on global social development and human rights. The first of these issues is the inequality of education within developing nations. While there has been significant improvement made in the past decades in school enrollment rates worldwide, there still exist drastic inequalities of education within developing nations resulting mainly from severe wealth gaps, war and territorial disputes, indigenous beliefs, and gender discrimination. The second topic concerns issues relating to child labor, which is a severe humanitarian abuse as children are forced to commit long-hour manual labor in hostile environments. Social, legal, and cultural issues lie behind child labor. Both of these topics are also extremely pressing for the global economic future, especially in developing nations, since a lack of education for youth and the presence of child labor will create a huge amount of unskilled workers, inhibiting the potential for future economic growth. To tackle these issues, delegates will not only be deliberating over immediate solutions that directly address known issues, but also will also be considering their underlying social causes and long-term solutions.
