Only the most momentous of global events have necessitated a UN Special Meeting. Special Meetings are held when member states have called for immediate action, debate, and global cooperation. This special session is called in direct response to the outrage surrounding the 2022 Qatar World Cup. This body will set the guidelines and expectations for international assemblies and global events, and the solutions proposed will be in accordance with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDGs 8, (Decent Work and Economic Growth), 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
Topic A: Guidance on Global Assemblies and Events
The purpose of this committee is to assess the spectacle of global events and present solutions that promote positive change regarding their planning, location selection, follow-through, and de-escalation in their aftermath. This session is called due to the criticism surrounding the Qatari World Cup in 2022: its location and selection process, the humanitarian crises that occurred during its preparation, the criticism of its attempts to appeal to the international community, the cultural clashes that occurred throughout the games, and the commentary surrounding the spectacle following. Ultimately, these concerns are not unique to the 2022 World Cup. Rather, international events, especially sporting matches, musical festivals, and public spectacles, are critical sociocultural and geopolitically historic occasions that necessitate international conversation and coordination. Whether it be climate change, culturally conscious tourism, infrastructure development, international cooperation and jurisdiction, cultural exchanges, concerns about human trafficking, or sports as a metric of international cooperation, delegates will be tasked with debating it here at the conference. Delegates will be encouraged to address this topic creatively and holistically, focusing on economic and environmental solutions in addition to social and cultural ones.
