The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) is the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. The committee concerns itself with questions of international importance concerning the security and demilitarization throughout all countries and regions, while ensuring that citizens around the globe remain protected. This year, DISEC will be tasked with addressing two critical questions of thematic relevance for the committee. These questions are meant to be discussed to rethink the role of technology in the modern era and how the international community can come together to ensure that individual citizens are able to live safely and securely in today’s world.
Topic A: Unexploded Ordnances in Former Conflict Zones
Delegates will examine the presence of unexploded ordnance (UXO) in former conflict zones. UXO not only poses a threat to the safety of civilians in the surrounding areas, but they also have negative impacts on the economic and environmental life of the local communities, including significant health costs and the contamination of soil. Though most nations have agreed to stop the proliferation of landmines and associated forms of ordnance, UXO remains a persistent threat to people around the world even decades after deployment.
Topic B: Evolution of Surveillance Technology for Security Purposes
Delegates will consider the rapid evolution of surveillance technology over the past several decades covering both the advancement of traditional surveillance methods as well as the emerging world of digital surveillance and cyber security. Surveillance remains a powerful tool in the prevention of crime around the world, but with growing concerns around the usage of artificial intelligence and facial recognition, effective resolutions will have to consider both the positive applications of surveillance, but also when and where this technology may go too far.
