It is August, 1990, and the world is shocked. In the span of just two days, the Iraqi military invaded and conquered the neighboring State of Kuwait. Although the invasion itself was quick, the ill-will between the nations had a much longer history. Tensions between the two nations had been bubbling for some time now, especially after Kuwait chose not to forgive Iraq’s significant war debts from the Iraq-Iran war in the 1980s. These tensions were further exacerbated when Iraq accused Kuwait of extracting oil from Iraq’s portion of the Rumaila oil field, which sat on the border of the two countries. Although there were internationally-mediated attempts to improve relations, negotiations were severed on August 1st, just a day before the invasion.
This committee will take place immediately after the invasion of Kuwait, the catalyst of the future Gulf War. Acting as the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), over the course of the weekend, delegates will discuss ways to address the initial invasion and the subsequent Iraqi occupation, working towards ways to stabilize the country in the long term. Delegates will be tasked with protecting civilian lives while attempting to explore a resolution between the two countries. These crucial decisions of how to navigate peace, progress, and protection will be yours to make throughout the UNSC at MUNUC 38.
The first three sessions of this committee will be all crisis sessions. After these three sessions, the dais will choose two possible topics for the next two sessions to debate based on the events that have unfolded during the crisis portion. At the start of the first GA session, delegates will vote on which topic they would like to spend the final two sessions focusing on.
