The Legal Committee (LEGAL) of the United Nations is the sixth committee of the United Nations General Assembly, and is responsible for the promotion of the progressive development of international law and its codification. The committee discusses a wide range of legal issues, including the creation of new international legal instruments, the interpretation and application of existing international law, the settlement of international disputes, and the rule of law. Now, the LEGAL committee is responsible for looking at two important issues in the international legal sphere: The International Adoption System and Data Privacy Laws.

Topic A: The International Adoption System

Thousands of children are adopted internationally every year through the International Adoption System, an institution that involves dozens of UN member nations. The International Adoption System has suffered from a myriad of problems ranging from the well-being of children, citizenship, and even human trafficking. The problems presented by the International Adoption System affect both developed and developing nations as well as their diplomatic relationships. Although stricter guidelines have been enforced in recent years, their adoption and implementation at the global level has been far from comprehensive. Delegates are tasked with creating and developing new international frameworks and guidelines to ensure the protection of children within the International Adoption System.

Topic B: Data Privacy Laws

Have you heard that your phone is listening to everything you say? Or have you had to click “accept cookies” to keep online shopping? Both of these are questions related to LEGAL’s Topic B: Data Privacy Laws. As the use of digital technology continues to increase, data privacy has become an increasingly important issue globally. Companies operating across borders must navigate complex and often conflicting regulations, and governments often struggle to enforce their own privacy laws when data is stored or processed outside their jurisdiction. These challenges highlight the need for greater international cooperation and standardization in addressing data privacy issues. Delegates are tasked with considering the growing problems surrounding Data Privacy Laws as well as developing new solutions that can be implemented internationally and at the regional level.
