The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is a body of the United Nations that works to eradicate poverty while protecting the program. The agency helps countries develop strong policies, skills, partnerships and institutions so they can sustain their progress. With a focus on fostering sustainable development and equitable growth, the committee aims to explore the following topics:

Topic A: Evaluating the Financial Structures and Relationships of West Africa

The monetary landscape of West Africa stands at a critical juncture, with 14 nations utilizing the Communauté Financière Africaine (CFA) franc—a currency pegged to the Euro. This arrangement raises questions about the economic autonomy and decision-making capabilities of the region. Discussions on the potential adoption of a West African currency and the development of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) have been ongoing for years. The committee will delve into the implications of these financial structures on the economic prospects of West Africa, considering factors such as natural resource abundance, population growth, and global economic trends. By examining the possibility of a unified currency and fostering economic cooperation, the committee seeks to address wealth inequality and enhance the material conditions of the region’s inhabitants.

Topic B: Policy and Practice of Foreign Aid in West Africa

Foreign aid plays a pivotal role in supporting socio-economic development initiatives across West African nations. However, the effectiveness and impact of foreign aid policies vary significantly, influenced by donor priorities, recipient governance, and alignment with local needs. While foreign aid has the potential to alleviate poverty, improve access to essential services, and enhance infrastructure, it also poses potential challenges such as wealth disparities and creating systems of dependence. The committee will assess the strengths and weaknesses of current foreign aid policies in West Africa, with a focus on their impact on wealth distribution and overall well-being. By proposing strategies to maximize positive outcomes and address underlying issues, the committee aims to advance sustainable development and equitable growth in the region.

Through collaborative discussions and innovative solutions, the committee aims to contribute to the economic prosperity and well-being of West Africa.
