Members of the Sixth Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, also known as LEGAL, debate on a wide variety of global matters from the perspective of their legitimacy in light of national sovereignty and established international law. LEGAL has published resolutions on various topics, from quelling extremist terrorism and systemic corruption to regulating maritime trade and use of technology in armed conflict. At MUNUC 33, delegates of LEGAL will be debating the legality and ethics of genetic engineering (Topic A), and information privacy and protection (Topic B). A resolution for Topic A will require a thorough analysis of recent scientific breakthroughs and account for their impact on societal and economic norms in the years to come. Delegates will need to survey current policies and accurately determine the jurisdiction of local law to solve Topic B. Both of these rapidly-emerging subjects will require creative and original solutions that address the issue in both the short and long term. Get excited for four days of substantive debate in MUNUC 33’s edition of LEGAL!
