The Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) is the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. This committee addresses and deals with issues that are related to disarmament challenges to global security as well as threats to international peace. Through supporting debates and drafting resolutions, DISEC seeks to maintain countries’ stability and promote transparency in armament. At MUNUC 33, delegates will strive to resolve one of the two issues that are crucial to the preservation of world peace. The first topic, which is biosecurity, tackles various problems in the aspect of agriculture, scientific research, and technological development. Since the late 1990s, biosecurity developed from a topic related to the growth and health of agriculture into a rising concern about the use of biological weapons, such as bioterrorism. In this committee, delegates will work together to provide a solution that draws a guideline for the utilization of biotechnology. The second topic, which is the weaponization of artificial intelligence, deals with one of the most pressing issues in today’s world, i.e., the ethics of military robots in warfare. Not only delegates will learn about the development of artificial intelligence, such as fifth-generation wireless (5g), as a technology, but also learn to prevent the spread of AI for malicious use. Regardless of the topic, delegates will cooperate in drafting and passing a resolution to protect the safety of the international community in both long term and short term.
